Imprisoned journalists worldwide from 2000-2023
As of December 1, 2023, 320 journalists were imprisoned worldwide. Although lower than in 2022, the figure remains among the highest shown in the last 20 years. The number of imprisoned journalists has consistently reached or surpassed 250 for the last few years, with global crises playing a major role in who and where is jailed in connection with their work. In 2023, more than 40 journalists were imprisoned in Myanmar and China respectively, along with more than 20 in Russia.
